George Romney
Mitt’s father served as chairman and president of the American Motors Corporation in the 1950s, helping it succeed despite the long odds of competing against larger domestic rivals like Ford and General Motors. George Romney left AMC to run for governor of Michigan and served three terms, becoming a leader of the GOP’s liberal wing, before making a run for president in 1968. He lost the Republican nomination to Richard Nixon and despite a stint as Housing Secretary in Nixon’s first term, Romney’s political star faded considerably.
