Jimmy Carter is usually remembered as an ineffective president, but he built a profitable agriculture business in Georgia before entering politics. He left the Navy to take over his family’s peanut farm after his father died in 1953. While things started rough – Carter’s farm only made a $187 profit in 1954 and for a time he and his wife lived in subsidized housing – he soon turned the business into quite a success.
