By issuing a dock receipt, the company recognizes the responsibility it has to store the cargo and safely deliver it to the intended location. This is used as a basis for the bill of lading.
A bill of lading, which is also known as B/L or BOL, is another type of document which serves as acknowledgement of the receipt of goods. The carrier creates this bill for the shipper. This includes information on the specific items to be shipped, the destination, as well as the consignee. It should also indicate the name of the shipping company, as well as the weight and measurements of the cargo. Should more than one type of transportation be identified for the shipment of a particular cargo, whether this travel by land, water, or air, the document becomes known as a thorough bill of lading.
