Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is a billionaire but he doesn’t have his own office.
In an interview with The New York Times, Hastings explains, “My office is my phone.”
“I found I was rarely using my cubicle, and I just had no need for it. It is better for me to be meeting people all around the building.”
He met with a Times reporter in Netflix’s cafeteria in which he leaned back and was, “tossing off answers to questions as if it were a day at the beach.”
Hastings is not regularly at his company’s headquarters. He recently admitted to Fortune that he spends 3 to 4 nights in L.A. and has been doing a lot of international travel.
Hastings could have an office for things such as reporter meetings but that’s just wasted space in his building when it wouldn’t really be a personalized space he uses on a regular basis.
This is a great reminder for business leaders that the office doesn’t make the leader, how they choose to spend their time does.
