Angel Food Ministries was, until recently, a non-profit run out of Georgia and aimed at delivering discounted food to needy families across the country. They recently shut down after a 49-count indictment exposed the company for fraud, theft, kickbacks and coverups.
Run by pastor Joe Wingo and his family members, AFM failed to serve food to the needy and sold their discounted goods indiscriminately, which largely attributed to the $130 million in profits they reaped in 2009. Over $4.5 million of that went to paying members of the Wingo family, and charity funds were further used to purchase a luxury vehicle, airplane, and almost $24,000 of electronics for personal use. Fraudulent cashier’s checks and shady money funneling tactics were used in an attempt to cover up what the Wingo family already knew was wrong, but after 17 years of illegal practices, AFM was finally indicted and shut down for good.
